Doctor's Point

Photography has its limits. I return to this beach time and again and try to catch the reason why I return. Which is not so much about what Doctors point looks like, as what it feels like. I haven't succeeded yet, but I will keep on trying.

I would go there right this minute. Actually, I feel I AM there.

There is a long thin stretch of sand which looks across an inlet to Waitati. It is strewn with bluestone boulders and at low tide there are patterns in the sand. In the shallow water there are oysters if you know where to look. There are terns nesting in the rocks above a cave. Walk through the cave and there is a little tiny private bay. If it's low tide, you walk past that to a headland on which is an old pa site. And round the corner and across an inlet from that is a whole new beach, Orokanui.
