In describing a photographic composition, positive space is the main subject of the picture and negative space is the area which surrounds it. Sometimes, for instance when I am standing on the end of a pier on an overcast day and the sky and sea are huge all around me, the negative space seems the most important bit. As it is in many other things I encounter in the course of the day.
